* In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Martin Ellis, then Organist and Choirmaster of St Martin’s Dorking, delivered a series of lectures to that church on the subject of Hymnody. To illustrate a point, he asked me for a new text to ‘The night is come, like to the day’, set to the music CHATHAM, by Percy Whitlock (1903-46).
