To help in preparation for the Lambeth Conference of 2008, hymns were asked for. The context of the conference was extremely painful, and there were fears that the Anglican Communion might break apart. This hymn was my submission.

To shape the text, I used the ancient liturgical form of the Good Friday Reproaches from the Cross. The first bar of music quotes from a setting of the Reproaches I made for a presentation about the Passion made at Lee Abbey in 1974.
